The IT/Business Project

The project

For a little period now at school, we started a project that we were going to spend a lot of time on. The project was to come up with good ideas and solutions to how shopping malls were going to survive and still be used a lot by people. What is meant by "survive" is that many shopping malls, especially in the U.S have been abandoned the past few years. This happens because a lot of people do not go shopping physically anymore, but goes shopping online. The shopping mall we were going to help was Sandvika Storsenter.

The process

We decided to work together as a team from the start of the project. There were different tasks for us to do and come up with a solution to. First, all of us brainstormed on how to make people want to go shopping. We decided to write it down in a document that everyone could edit and cooperate in at the same time. It is called google docs, which is basically microsoft word, but online. We started writing down our ideas and eventually, we had 3000 words in our document. But since it was supposed to be like that the text would get to the point immediately and no bullshit and own unnecessary words. After some more hard work, we managed to make a great text that included all of our ideas. We reworded everything so that the text became nice and smooth, and answered all of the tasks in a good way. When we finished the text we decided to divide our group in half. The business people was going to find new solutions and ideas, while the IT guys were working on a complex adobe Xd project (which is a designer program). We made our prototype model first. The main goal for the model was to come with suggestions on how to make the Sanvika Storsenter website better. This was because we saw some potential to make the website better, and we saw that many of the competitor shopping malls had better and smoother websites. We spent a lot of time on that project, and in the end, it paid of. It became a great model of how the website could look to make it smoother.

In the end of the project, we are going to be practicing how to in the best way possible present this for the Sandvika Storsenter. We all agree on what parts of the project each one of us is going to present, so we are ready for when the time comes.

The movie we watched in class

The importance of working together as a team

In the movie we just watched we saw four boys working on making a robot together that could do specific tasks underwater. The boys worked for a long time on the making of the robot, and in the end, it paid off. They won the competition, and that was all because of that they worked together as a team. In the competition, they all knew what they needed to do.

What surprised me on the list

What surprised me the most in the list was that Christian didn't get bullied, he seemed like the one that would be bullied. But it might be that he did not act the exact same way in the movie that he did in the real world, so it does also make sense.

The different teams had different access to materials

The fact that the different schools had different limits on how big budget they had for the robot, some of them did not have as good assumptions. For example, the MIT team had a budget on 18 000+ dollars while the Carl Hayden school had a budget on 800- dollars. So they had to use cheaper materials and think harder on solutions for how to build a cheap but working robot. That way they were more clever than any other team, not only did they win, but they managed to win with a budget robot.

Where can robots be useful today?

Robots can be useful in places where humans physically do the job as fast or good. The robots are, for example useful in markets, storage rooms, like in amazons storage. A place where they already use some robots is in hospitals. And last but not least where the job is too dangerous for humans, robots might be an excellent solution.

How has the situation changed for immigrants in the US

For many years, immigrants in the US has not been welcome. But when Barack Obama became president, conditions changed. He made it so that immigrants that were young in the US could under special conditions stay in the US. He invented this:  Deferred Action  for Childhood Arrivals. But when trump became president, unfortunately he decided to end it right after it was invented. Here you see something Berni Sanders said (Seen on the picture):

President Donald Trump has decided to end the Obama-era program that grants work permits to undocumented immigrants who arrived in the country as children, according to two sources familiar with his thinking. Senior White House aides huddled Sunday afternoon to discuss the rollout of a decision likely to ignite a political firestorm — and fulfill one of the president’s core campaign promises. My reading of The absolute story true diary of a part-time Indian.

Theme

I think that the main theme in the book is Friendship, love, and decisions.
In the book about a part-time Indian, the main character in the book was an Indian boy that was different. He also had a brain damage caused by water in his head. Therefore, he was bullied by other children in the reservation where he lived alongside with a lot of other Indians. Later on, he left his best friend behind along with many others and started a new part life at a normal school. He found his place there. At page 217 he realizes who he really is, and he realized that he can be who he wants, if he only follows his dreams, and complete them. He found his rightful place in the world and liked it.

Here is whats written where he decides who he really is:
"I wept and wept because I knew I was never going to drink and because I was never going to kill myself and because I was going to have a better life out in the white world."
The boy never gave up because he knew that things always get better. He only needed to follow his dreams, and let go of the old things.

Setting

The setting in the book was a boy who struggled to find the right place in the world. He decided to leave his school and start a new part life at a new school. Everything changed afterward.
Here is what is written in the book where he tells his best friend that he is leaving:
""Rowdy," I said. "I am going to Reardan tomorrow." For the first time he saw that I was serious, but he didn't want me to be serious. "You'll never do it," he said. "You're too scared." "I'm going," I said. "No way, you're a wuss." "I'm doing it.""'
Even though he knew that rowdy and everyone else would not like him leaving the reservation, and in fact most likely not even accept it, he left, because that was following his dreams.

Plot

The main plots in the book were the boy in the reservation that was best friends with his friend Rowdy. They enjoyed hanging out together, but the boy still felt like something was wrong. He wanted to do something in his life, while the others in the reservation wanted to stay in the reservation like everyone else and act like all the other people in the reservation.
""You'll be the first to leave the rez this way," Mom said. "The Indians around here are going to be angry with you." Shoot, I figure that my fellow tribal members are going to torture me.""

The boy left the reservation because he knew he would get a new and better life if he did. Even if it includes leaving his best friend.

Character development

The main character in the book developed from a boy that was afraid, weird and different, to a boy that stood up for himself and his loved ones, a boy that could be himself. The reason why he managed to become another person was that he dared to leave everyone else behind to find a new greater life. Even his own family and his best friend disliked him at one point. There were so many loved ones in his life that he lost in this process, including his dog, sister, and the best friend of his father. Because of this, he became stronger because lost many of the things in his life that he lived for. Therefore he did not care that much about the consequences of leaving the reservation. Here is a quote where he understands what he wants to do and where he belongs.

"I realized that I might be a lonely Indian boy, but I was not alone in my loneliness. There were millions of other Americans who had left their birthplaces in search of a dream."
The boy had gone through a tough time in his life. But he kept on going the way he knew he needed to and followed his dreams. In the end, his life turned around and ended up in his favor. Life got better and kept on going.

My impressions of the book

After reading the book, I was surprised by the way it was written. It seems like the author wrote free and not like the classic novel style. It was written like a diary, which is what he called the book. A true diary. The style of the writing made the book easier and more fun to read. I enjoyed every chapter of the book. That is what made the book special. The way he wrote it like a diary. Including the feelings and thoughts of the main character. I expected the book to be more boring and normal, but it was great and fun to read. So I really enjoyed the book.

Questions for the radio show

Is there a possibility that something similar could happen in the world nowadays?

How was your life in the reservation?

Why did you leave everyone?

How was life at Reardan school?

Do you feel bad for the alcoholics in the reservation?

Do you think Indians are different, if yes why?
